How to choose a POS system for your shop in Saudi Arabia

Twelve questions to ask before you buy POS software for a baqala, supermarket, restaurant or retail shop — so you do not have to change systems again in a year.

Updated · 3 min read

In short: in Saudi Arabia the first question is ZATCA Phase 2. After that, choose a POS that keeps billing without internet, prints Arabic receipts, handles barcodes and weighed items, controls stock and gives you support in your own language.

The 12-point checklist

  1. ZATCA Phase 2 ready? It must onboard with an OTP from the FATOORA portal, report simplified invoices and clear standard invoices. A QR code alone is not enough. What Phase 2 involves →
  2. Does billing continue without internet? Cloud-only POS systems stop when the internet does. A POS with a server in the shop keeps billing and sends invoices to ZATCA later.
  3. Arabic and English receipts? Invoices must be in Arabic; your staff and customers may want English too.
  4. Fast enough for the rush? Barcode search, hold and recall, split payments (cash, card, credit customers) and a screen cashiers learn in minutes.
  5. Weighed and loose items? Baqalas and supermarkets need scale barcodes for vegetables, meat and dates.
  6. Restaurant features? Tables, waiter orders on a phone or tablet, kitchen tickets on separate printers.
  7. Stock that updates itself? Every sale and purchase should move stock; you should see what is running low.
  8. Purchasing and suppliers? Supplier bills, purchase returns and what you owe each supplier.
  9. Accounts and VAT return? If the POS posts to the ledger, your accountant does not retype every sale.
  10. More than one branch? Stock transfers between branches and a combined view for the owner.
  11. Can the owner check sales from home? Secure access from your phone without opening your shop network to the internet.
  12. Support in your language, close by? Installation, training and quick help when a printer stops — in Malayalam, English or Arabic.
